Wildlife Migration, Culture & Beaches: A Journey Through Tanzania's Heart

Tanzania is one of our most requested safari destinations. Its combination of incredible wildlife, spectacular scenery, world-class accommodations and top guides make it a must-see choice for travelers. If you are interested in visiting the Northern Circuit or discovering some of its other incredible sights and activities such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro; chimpanzee trekking in Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains National Parks; or relaxing in the beautiful Zanzibar archipelago.

Tanzania is a year-round destination, though some months provide better game viewing. There is abundant wildlife in all of its parks and reserves, and because there are both migratory and resident populations, visitors can expect consistency throughout the year. The country’s dry season is from July to October and provides some of the best game viewing as the vegetation is sparse. The dry season also brings more pleasant temperatures to coastal and island destinations.

The wildebeest migration is happening every day of the year, cycling through the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and Kenya. Its given location at any one time somewhat follows a pattern, making it important to work with an expert on planning your safari to ensure you have the best chance to see it during your visit. Space is at a premium when the migration should be nearby, so accommodations should be booked at least a year in advance, if not two. Our Safari Specialist will discuss timing with you and help you determine the best time for your visit.

  • The Great Migration is the Mara River crossing in the northern Serengeti. This perilous journey, typically occurring between July and October, is the epitome of nature’s raw power and unpredictability. As herds gather on the riverbanks, the tension is palpable. When the first brave animal leaps into the crocodile-infested waters, a breathtaking frenzy ensues. The chaos, splashing water, and sheer determination of the animals create dramatic compositions that capture the essence of survival.
  • In stark contrast to the dramatic river crossings, the calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, from January to March, presents a more serene yet equally compelling side of the Great Migration. During this period, the vast plains come alive with the birth of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves. The sight of newborns taking their first steps, surrounded by attentive mothers and vigilant predators, offers a profound narrative of new beginnings and the cyclical nature of life. The soft light of the early morning and late afternoon enhances the gentle beauty of these scenes, providing photographers with exquisite opportunities to capture tender moments and the vibrant energy of life at its freshest.

When to visit Tanzania

The best time to visit Tanzania is during the dry season from late Juneto October, which offers the premier wildlife viewing, pleasant weather, and the Great Migration river crossings. The short dry season from January to February is excellent for the Serengeti calving season.
